Description

On a December evening in 2024, three middle-aged sisters meet for dinner at a slowly-emptying Connaught Place restaurant. Indu, the eldest, is a retired Air India ground-staff manager who has not had a holiday in seven years. Lalita, the middle one, is a Vasant Vihar housewife with a marriage everyone admires and she has stopped looking at. And Rohini, the youngest, has flown in from Toronto, suddenly, with no return ticket and a face her sisters have not seen in this much pain since their mother’s funeral in 2009.

Across three taut, beautifully written acts — a long dinner, a long walk through the Inner Circle, and a long, sleepless night in Indu’s barsati on Babar Road — the three sisters dismantle, with the precision only sisters can manage, the careful fictions on which two decades of family life have been built. The husband who is not as kind as everyone thinks. The mother who chose one of them. The aborted PhD. The brother in Australia who has not called in a year. And the question, finally asked at 4 a.m., of why none of them ever became what they had so loudly promised, at twenty-two, to become.

Inspired equally by Chekhov and by the long winter dinners of Delhi’s professional middle class, *Three Sisters at Connaught Place* is a contemporary Indian play of remarkable emotional precision — funny, fierce, and almost unbearably tender.

Already in production with three major Indian theatre companies. A drama for our time.
