The Story Behind This One

There is a moment right after rain that every gardener in India knows, when everything is heavier and brighter at the same time, the leaves fat with water, the fruit almost too red, the smell of wet earth everywhere. That is the moment this painting lives in. A young woman lies in the grass under a cherry tree still dripping from the rain, a braid over her shoulder, a vine wound around her wrist like a bangle, and a basket of fresh picked cherries at her side. Wildflowers all around her, red and yellow and that particular blue of forget me nots, and drops of rainwater caught mid fall from the branches above.

The detail is the whole show here. Individual water droplets sitting on her skin, light flaring off the wet leaves, a tiny cherry tattoo with a pink bow on her arm, her painted nails, every cherry in the basket rendered one by one. It is the fourth piece in the artist’s Harvest After Rain series and the one that went properly viral when she released it, and once you have looked at it for a minute you can see why, it feels less like a picture of a harvest and more like the feeling of one.
