Description

A stable on a hill road, somewhere in working-class America. Lisa does sixty-hour weeks flipping burgers at Wendy’s to cover rent on a trailer she shares with Adam, a boyfriend who contributes nothing but self-pity and demands. Her two evenings a week grooming horses at Sally’s stables are the only hours that belong to her, and Sally has noticed. The offer starts small: leave him, there’s a bed in the office, no rent. The seed is sown.

What Sally hasn’t fully explained is what else happens at the stables. Lisa’s escape route comes with a new name, Flame, delivered by email with instructions attached, and a training regime that starts with dawn runs up the 800-foot hill road and gets stranger and more demanding from there. Chapter by chapter, first day, first week, first run out, the book tracks her transformation from exhausted burger-flipper into something she has no vocabulary for yet. The question isn’t whether she can do it. It’s what she’s willing to become to never go back.

Bond frames this as wish-fulfilment written from the inside; her afterword and bio make no secret that the fantasies are her own. That first-person conviction is what separates it from the anonymous end of the genre. It also makes the book’s central trade explicit: if the life waiting at home is servitude without care, is a harness with kindness attached freedom or just a better-lit cage?
