Longbourn, Hertfordshire, at the turn of the nineteenth century. Mr and Mrs Bennet have five daughters, a modest estate entailed away to a distant cousin, and no sons. When Mr Bennet dies, his family loses everything, which is why the arrival of a wealthy young bachelor at nearby Netherfield Park sets the whole neighbourhood, and Mrs Bennet’s nerves, into motion. The marriage market is not a subplot here. It is survival.

At the first assembly, Mr Bingley is charmed by gentle Jane Bennet, while his friend Mr Darcy, rich, proud and visibly bored, declines to dance with her sister Elizabeth, dismissing her within her hearing. Elizabeth, quick-witted and quicker to judge, decides exactly what kind of man he is. The charming officer Mr Wickham soon supplies a history that confirms it. Everything that follows, a disastrous proposal, a letter that upends her certainties, an elopement that threatens to ruin the family, tests whether first impressions deserve the confidence we give them.

Two centuries on, this remains the novel every enemies-to-lovers story is measured against, but its reputation as a romance undersells it. Austen published it anonymously, credited only as “the author of Sense and Sensibility,” and packed it with some of the sharpest social comedy ever written: the oily Mr Collins, the imperious Lady Catherine, the wonderfully weary Mr Bennet. Her real subject is judgment, how intelligence itself can mislead when vanity is holding the pen. The question Elizabeth faces is still the reader’s own: when you are certain of someone’s character, how much of that certainty is evidence, and how much is pride?
