Our Story

Started With a Shelf, Grew Into a Bookstore

This started in 2018 with one stubborn question: why was it so hard for an Indian reader to find good books at fair prices, delivered quickly, chosen by someone who actually read them? The catalogue at the time was 500 titles, picked by hand.

The literary range in this country is staggering. Sanskrit epics. Urdu ghazals. Tamil Sangam poetry. Bengali modernism. Marathi social drama. Hindi pulp and literary fiction sharing the same shelf. Yet most readers were stuck with whatever the nearest shop happened to stock. That gap is the whole reason we’re here.

So we built the thing we wished existed. Those 500 titles are now more than 50,000, spanning every genre, language, and age group. A Note From the Founder

“I’m Anindita Ghose and I started Desi Tales because I was tired of watching readers hunt for books that should have been easy to find.

Growing up, my shelves were a mess of languages and eras—Sanskrit epics beside Bengali modernism, Urdu ghazals next to Marathi drama, Hindi pulp fiction stacked on Tamil poetry. That chaos felt normal to me. It wasn’t until I started looking for those same books as an adult that I realized how broken the system was: inflated prices, indifferent stock and the quiet assumption that Indian readers would settle for whatever was left on the shelf. I refused to accept that.

For me, a book is never just paper and ink. It is a conversation across time, a voice that keeps you company at 2 a.m., a window into a life you haven’t lived yet. When we get one wrong, we say so and pull it. That’s the whole promise behind “curated with love,” and it’s why you won’t find a thousand near-identical titles padding out the catalogue.
